“I got the check.”
In November, Google made the LIFE Magazine photo archives available online. By the end of the year, the archive’s nearly 10 million photos will be available. Some of the images are serious and important, some are beautiful and moving, others are just fun. The following series falls in the latter category.
According to LIFE: “Manhattan’s Stork Club, one of the most famous drinking holes in American nightclub lore, was the place to see and be seen in the Big Apple from its opening in 1929 to its demise in 1965. The club was the baby of one Sherman Billingsley, an ex-bootlegger from Oklahoma who created what the columnist Walter Winchell once called ‘New York’s New Yorkiest’ joint.”
Billingsley loved to send secret hand signals to his staff when he was sitting with customers. Here are some of the best.

“Get them out, and don’t let them in again.”

“Bring them a bottle of champagne.”

“Not important people.”
