Sparkling, Subcontinent-Style
Panna II // 93 1st Ave., between 5th and 6th Sts.

Recommended to me by Michael (one of the fabulous waiters who helped out during YSL’s market week), Panna II seems to define experiential dining. After getting past the neighboring restaurants’ persuasive proprietors, watch your head as you enter the trailer-sized space whose ceiling is littered with thousands of hanging lights (the restaurant’s motto is “Where chili pepper lights meets Christmas tree lights” after all). The decor is outrageous, the service is pushy, and the vibe is just sort of surreal. Opt for the pastry-like coconut poori and the lamb korma, if you’re willing to venture out of your curry comfort zone at this East Village find. And don’t forget to tell the scurrying waiters that you’re celebrating a birthday — you won’t be disappointed.
