Mister Softee Gets an Upgrade

Something strange has been happening in SoHo. Fashionable people of all sorts have been strolling into the area’s trendy boutiques toting…ice cream cones. The latest in nostalgic chic, the cone owns this summer. Enter: the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck.  Purveyors of “artisan” ice cream, Ben Van Leeuwen and his team have set up (movable) shop at the corner of Prince and Greene, with more locations to follow.  The ten preservative-free flavors surely rival other chains’ 31; try giandujia — a chocolate/hazelnut mix reminiscent of Nutella — or pistachio, made from special Sicilian stock. And to top it off, take delight in the fact that Van Leeuwen is as enviro-conscious as it is delicious, using only cups, napkins, spoons, and straws made from renewable resources.
