Subterranean Delight

Defender of clean design, champion of Helvetica, Massimo Vignelli has created some of the most beautiful pieces in modern design. But his ubiquitous American Airlines and Bloomingdale’s logos don’t compare to his true masterpiece: the New York City subway sign system. While the signage is still in use, Vignelli’s elegant, abstracted map is not. Below are images of his original 1972 subway map and the updated version featured in the May 2008 issue of Men’s Vogue.
